Nicky Sumner

I completed a Master of Clinical Psychology at the University of Western Australia in 2004. Since then, I have worked in a variety of diverse settings such as Perth Clinic, Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital & private practice. I am registered with the Psychology Board of Australia with endorsement in Clinical Psychology and I am member of the Australian Psychological Society. I have recently returned to practice after taking some time out to parent full-time.

I enjoy working with all ages. I respect the courage it takes for a person to participate in therapy and examine the areas of their life that are causing them distress. The therapy environment can offer a unique space to share concerns that we cannot do anywhere else, and a place to feel truly listened to and understood. To facilitate this, I attempt to create an environment that feels as comfortable and safe as possible. From here, I work collaboratively to develop a recovery plan that considers each individuals’ unique personality, needs and life circumstances. I find it incredibly rewarding to see a person build a deeper understanding of themselves and how their current difficulties have emerged and connect with their strengths and motivations so they can feel more hopeful and confident in working towards their goals.

I draw on a range of evidenced based approaches, including cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), schema therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and attachment and family systems models.
I work with children, adolescents and adults experiencing a wide range of difficulties including:

  • Depression and other mood difficulties
  • Stress, anxiety, and fears/phobias
  • Self-esteem & self-compassion
  • Eating and body image concerns
  • Grief and loss
  • Perinatal mental health
  • Sleep problems
  • Child & adolescent behavioural problems
  • Parenting and family relationships
