Live a life guided by your values, not by your fears.
ACT teaches skills to reduce the impact of painful thoughts and feelings while helping you take meaningful action. Rather than eliminating distress, ACT empowers you to move forward with it.
Acceptance and commitment
ACT gets its name from one of its core messages: Accept what is out of your control, and commit to action that enriches your life. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy teaches you skills to deal with your painful thoughts and feelings effectively – you will learn to lessen the impact that painful thoughts and feelings have over you. ACT is not about getting rid of painful thoughts and feelings, but rather having them take a back seat so you can get on with living your life.
Powerful Results
One important feature of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is mindfulness skills (see section above). Another important part of ACT is helping you to clarify what is truly important and meaningful to you (i.e. helping you gain clarity on your values). Once your values are clarified you can then use that knowledge to guide, inspire and motivate you to change your life for the better. A key theme of ACT is helping people to live “rich, full and meaningful lives”. For some more detail about ACT, click through to our blog.
Pain is inevitable. Struggle is optional.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, is a psychological treatment that helps reduce the impact of painful thoughts and emotions. Instead of eliminating distress, ACT teaches acceptance and encourages action aligned with your values, helping you live more meaningfully.
ACT empowers you to live by your values rather than your fears. It focuses on mindfulness, acceptance and behavioural change, helping you respond to difficult emotions in a healthy way and make choices that bring purpose and fulfilment.
ACT effectively treats anxiety, depression, stress, trauma and emotional difficulties. At J&R Clinical Psychologists, ACT therapy supports clients in building resilience, emotional awareness and a greater sense of wellbeing.
During ACT sessions, you’ll practise mindfulness and values-based exercises with your therapist. You’ll learn to handle painful thoughts and emotions effectively, taking meaningful action that supports your goals and mental health.
Unlike therapies that aim to remove distress, ACT helps you accept challenging thoughts and feelings while pursuing what matters most. Its focus is on creating a rich, full and meaningful life, even when discomfort is present.
