Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS)

Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) is an evidence-based approach developed by Dr. Ross Greene that helps children and parents work together to solve problems to help address challenging behaviour. Rather than relying on using rewards or consequences, CPS focuses on understanding what’s getting in the way of a child meeting expectations and working together to resolve it.

How it helps

CPS is based on the understanding that “kids do well if they can.” When children struggle, it’s often because they’re having difficulty with skills such as flexibility, frustration tolerance, or problem-solving — not because they’re unwilling. By identifying and addressing these lagging skills and unsolved problems, families can shift from managing behaviour to building understanding and connection.

What to expect

In therapy, parents and clinicians work together to understand the child’s perspective and find proactive, collaborative ways to resolve challenges. This approach helps reduce conflict, improve communication, and strengthen relationships, while supporting children to develop the emotional and social skills they need to thrive.

Frequently asked questions

Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) is an evidence-based approach developed by Dr Ross Greene. It helps children and parents work together to solve problems and manage challenging behaviour through understanding and collaboration, rather than punishment or rewards.

CPS is built on the idea that “kids do well if they can.” It focuses on identifying the underlying skills children struggle with, such as flexibility, frustration tolerance and problem-solving, helping families build stronger communication and connection.

In CPS sessions, parents and clinicians work together to understand the child’s perspective and identify unsolved problems. Through collaboration, families learn proactive strategies to reduce conflict, support emotional growth, and improve relationships.

CPS can help with emotional regulation, behavioural challenges, anxiety, and difficulties at home or school. It empowers families to move from managing behaviour to fostering understanding and lasting change.

At J&R Clinical Psychologists, our therapists use CPS to create a supportive environment for both parents and children. The approach promotes empathy, problem-solving, and stronger family relationships.
