Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is diagnosed when someone experiences either intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviours they feel unable to stop (compulsions). Sometimes people experience both obsessions and compulsions, and sometimes they experience one or the other.

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition involving:

Obsessions: intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges

These often cause distress, anxiety, or guilt. Common obsessions include:

  • Fear of contamination or illness
  • Disturbing thoughts related to harm, religion, or morality
  • Fear of making a mistake or causing something bad to happen
  • A need for things to feel “just right” or symmetrical

– Compulsions
– repetitive behaviours or mental acts done to reduce anxiety

These are used to neutralise or avoid distress caused by obsessions. Common compulsions include:

  • Excessive cleaning or handwashing
  • Repeated checking (e.g. doors, appliances, locks)
  • Mental reviewing, counting, or praying
  • Avoiding situations that trigger obsessions

Even though people with OCD often know their fears aren’t rational, the urge to perform compulsions can feel impossible to resist.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD is a chronic disorder characterised by intrusive thoughts and/or repetitive behaviours. OCD can often be successfully treated with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) including an Exposure and Responsive Prevention (ERP) approach.

What It’s Like Living With OCD

OCD can feel like a constant battle inside your mind. You might:

  • Spend hours stuck in rituals that never truly ease the anxiety
  • Avoid everyday situations because they trigger distressing thoughts
  • Feel gripped by guilt, shame, or fear, even when you know your thoughts aren’t logical
  • Struggle to focus at work, school, or in conversations
  • Feel exhausted from trying to “get it right” or keep things under control
  • Replay thoughts, events, or worries over and over in your head

It’s not about being neat or particular, it’s about trying to silence a sense of threat that just won’t switch off.

The good news? OCD is highly treatable. With the right support, you can learn to respond differently and start reclaiming your time, energy, and peace of mind.

OCD and Anxiety: What’s the Connection?

OCD is an anxiety disorder, but it often shows up differently from general anxiety. While anxiety might involve constant worry, OCD centres on specific, intrusive thoughts that trigger intense distress, followed by compulsive actions to ease it.

The relief from these rituals is short-lived, keeping you stuck in a cycle of fear and repetition. Many people experience both OCD and broader anxiety, and at J&R Psychology, we tailor treatment to address both, helping you manage uncertainty, reduce compulsions, and feel more in control.

OCD Treatment at J&R Psychology

Our OCD clinic in Perth provides therapy that’s tailored, evidence-based, and focused on real change. We use:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

The gold-standard treatment for OCD. CBT helps you understand the link between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and teaches practical strategies to interrupt the OCD cycle.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).

ERP is a key component of OCD treatment. It involves gradually facing feared situations without performing compulsions, allowing anxiety to reduce naturally over time.

ACT-Based Approaches.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can help you relate to obsessive thoughts differently, reducing their grip and helping you live more in line with your values.
